Allison Williams Opens Up About Motherhood After She Suffered From Postpartum Depression, 'I Feel..'

Allison Williams is one of the most beloved actresses in Hollywood. She is best known for her role as ‘Marnie Michaels’ on the HBO comedy-drama series Girls. Now, almost a decade after the show premiered, it was recently announced that HBO has greenlit a revival of the series. All four core cast members, including Allison, Lena Dunham, Jemima Kirke, and Zosia Mamet, are set to return for the revival.

With fans already excited to see Allison in her iconic role for the second time, the actress opened up about her personal life in a new interview.

Allison Williams reveals that she is ‘really lucky’ to be a mom

Allison Williams recently sat down for an interview with PEOPLE. During the interview, she got candid about motherhood and stated, “I love being Arlo’s mom,” referring to her 4-year-old son, whom she shares with her husband, Alexander Dreymon. She added:

“We are having so much fun raising this guy. He is awesome. I feel really lucky.”

Allison shared that her family of three is super close and they cherish all their time together. The Girls alum called it an honor to have a kid and watch him grow up every day. In her words:

“And when you look back at pictures of your newborn, you see your current day child just trapped in this tiny little body, who can’t talk to you yet or move around the way it wants to move around, and then they just sort of unfurl themselves as time goes on.”

This is not the first time that Allison Williams opened up about her experience with motherhood. In an interview on The Motherly Podcast, when the actress was asked what surprised her the most about becoming a mom, she revealed that it was the actual delivery stuff. She recalled that she had a pretty mild first trimester, something that made her feel really lucky. However, Allison admitted that her anxiety got really bad around two weeks before she gave birth to her son.

Allison did not pay much attention to it at that time. Explaining the reason behind this, she said that it got harder and harder for her to diagnose what was a deviation from the norm and what was normal for the circumstances because back then she felt like her body was someone else’s. Allison Williams also confessed that she eventually ended up with postpartum depression. She shared:

“I couldn’t believe how anxious I was, and I had postpartum depression, and I just felt very suddenly unable to be the mom that I always pictured myself being. But over time I got there, and now I feel the way I wished I could have felt at the beginning.”

Allison Williams and Alexander Dreymon’s relationship

Aliion met her husband and Arlo’s father, Alexander, on the set of Horizon Line. In the movie, the pair had to play a couple who navigated the aftermath of their airline pilot suffering a fatal heart attack mid-flight.

As their on-screen chemistry translated off-screen, Allison and Alexander began dating at the end of 2019. It was in November 2021 that they welcomed their son via an emergency C-section. The duo kept the news of Arlo’s birth a secret until April 2022. A few years later, Allison referred to Alexander as her “husband” in an interview, and media outlets confirmed in June 2025 that they had secretly tied the knot.
