Late afternoon on Waikiki Beach, the sand still warm, outrigger canoes pulled up above the tideline and Diamond Head turning gold to the east. Infinity and beyond

At the Edge Infinity Pool, the ocean begins where the pool ends. Reserved for guests aged 16 and over, it’s the longest oceanfront infinity pool in North America, its rim set so the water appears to spill into the Pacific with Diamond Head beyond.

Helumoa Playground is a kids’ waterpark built for fun: two pools, a 21-metre waterslide, waterfalls, two whirlpool spas and cabanas for parents watching on. Baskin-Robbins is next door.

Beach to Diamond Head

Waikiki’s surf breaks are long, slow and perfect for learners – the beach boys have been teaching visitors to surf here since the 1920s. Lessons, boards and outrigger canoe rides* are on the sand out front, if you’re up for it.

The included Tradewinds Sail is a different kind of ocean ride. The Maita’i, a 47-foot catamaran, leaves from the beach for 90 minutes along the shoreline, Honolulu’s towers on one side, Diamond Head ahead and a mai tai in hand as the boat heels into the wind.

Learning the island

The included daily program brings Hawaiian culture into the stay in small, memorable ways. Hiuwai, the Hawaiian sunrise ceremony, gathers guests at the water’s edge for a ritual of renewal. Floating yoga follows on the Edge Infinity Pool before it opens, with sun salutations on anchored boards over the water. Afternoons offer ukulele lessons, beginners’ hula, flower lei making, lauhala weaving, Aqua Zumba and Talk Story with Tutu, where a Hawaiian elder shares island history.

Beyond the sand

One included day out heads into Hawaii’s history, from the 1893 overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom to the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. The tour starts at the Pearl Harbor visitor centre, boards a Navy shuttle boat past Battleship Row to the USS Arizona Memorial, then continues into Honolulu for Iolani Palace and the King Kamehameha statue.

Alternatively, take the shuttle to Waikele Premium Outlets, Hawaii’s only outlet centre, with Coach, Kate Spade, Michael Kors, Polo Ralph Lauren and Tory Burch among its 50-plus stores.
