Chelsea’s interim boss Calum McFarlane says the appointment of Xabi Alonso as the club’s new manager is “really exciting” for everyone.

Former Bayer Leverkusen and Real Madrid head coach Alonso has signed a four-year deal with Chelsea and will start work in July.

“Yeah, it doesn’t surprise me,” McFarlane said of Alonso’s appointment, despite Chelsea having a disappointing season.

“It’s a massive club. I think we’ve got really exciting players playing here. Even though it’s been a disappointing season, they are showing at times this year the kind of quality that we have. So yeah, it’s a massive club and it will always attract top players and top managers.

“A great coach. He’s had a really good career so far. Won major trophies, a great playing career. He’ll have a lot of respect from everyone.

“Really exciting news.”

In the meantime, McFarlane’s side face a huge battle to get into Europe for next season, having lost Saturday’s FA Cup final to Manchester City and currently sitting tenth in the Premier League table ahead of Tuesday’s clash with rivals Tottenham.

“We need to win the next two games to give ourselves the best chance to finish as high up in the league as possible and get European football back as our only focus in doing our job and putting in the performance we need to,” McFarlane said.
