Amazon has announced that it will not release a new version of its voice assistant, Alexa, until 2025. This decision comes amid challenges in developing the anticipated upgrade, known as “Remarkable Alexa,” which was initially expected to launch sooner. Reports indicate that the new Alexa will incorporate advanced generative AI features powered by Anthropic’s Claude AI models, rather than Amazon’s own technology, which reportedly struggled to meet performance expectations.
The upgraded Alexa is designed to offer a more conversational experience, generate content on demand, and respond more naturally to user queries. Although there were initial plans for a rollout in October 2024, the timeline has now been pushed back to 2025. The new version is expected to be offered as a subscription service, with potential fees ranging from $5 to $10 per month.
Amazon’s CEO Andy Jassy has expressed a strong interest in enhancing Alexa’s capabilities through generative AI, aiming to position the assistant as a leading personal assistant in the market. The delay reflects the company’s commitment to ensuring that the new features meet customer expectations before launch.
