Adilabad: As severe heatwave conditions continue to grip the erstwhile Adilabad district, roadside Ambali (gruel) and curd rice distribution centres have emerged as a welcome source of relief for people battling scorching temperatures and dehydration.
With temperatures hovering around 45°C over the past few days, political leaders, charitable trusts, NGOs and individuals have stepped up humanitarian efforts by distributing Ambali, curd rice and cool drinking water at several locations across the district.
People travelling under the harsh summer sun are stopping in large numbers at these centres to cool themselves and escape exhaustion caused by the intense heat. Locals say the traditional Ambali, along with curd rice, helps lower body temperature and prevents dehydration during peak summer conditions.
Leaders belonging to the BJP, Congress and BRS have opened Ambali and curd rice distribution centres in different towns and villages. Former MLA Koneru Konappa has been organising Ambali distribution at several locations in Sirpur (T) Assembly constituency, while Diwakar Rao has been running curd rice centres in parts of Mancherial town.
Under the banner of the Kokkirala Raghupathi Rao Charitable Trust, MLA K. Premsagar Rao has also been distributing Ambali in Mancherial Assembly constituency.
Asifabad MLA Kova Laxmi inaugurated a gruel distribution centre at Asifabad district headquarters and personally distributed Ambali to the public. Asifabad DCC vice-president and UBY Foundation chairman Tariq also launched an Ambali distribution centre in the town.
Under the banner of the Pakala Foundation, Ambali is also being distributed in Nirmal district.
Govind Thitre of Umri village in Utnoor mandal said consuming Ambali was an age-old traditional practice during summers. He said Ambali and curd rice helped people stay hydrated, protected them from fainting due to heat exhaustion and reduced the risk of sunstroke to some extent.
