The This Is Going to Hurt star has already received critical acclaim for her latest role.

Ambika Mod is at the heart of the chaos in the new season of Black Doves.

Black Doves is back on Netflix with a second season and it sees Helen Webb (played by Keira Knightley) return for the ultimate game of deception as she balances life as the Prime Minister’s wife with being an undercover spy. This season also welcomes One Day star Ambika Mod, who plays agent Laila Joshi- quick-witted and chaotic character.

A rogue operative with a sharp tongue, actress Mod opened up about her character’s casual approach to killing, saying: “She’s quite chill about what she does, her vibe is that it’s just a job. She could just as well be an accountant.” Here is all you need to know about the actress, from her impressive achievements to her personal health battles.

Ambika Mod is a 31-year-old English actress and comedian best known for her roles in The Stolen Girl, This Is Going to Hurt, and One Day. Hailing from Hertfordshire, she is of Indian heritage.

At the start of her career, she worked as a personal assistant at Condé Nast, whilst also performing comedy sketches. After appearing in a number of short films, her breakthrough came as Shruti Acharya, a struggling junior doctor opposite her Black Doves co-star Ben Whishaw in This Is Going to Hurt.

Throughout her career, she has earned prestigious titles and accolades and was included on the Forbes 30 Under 30 Europe list in 2024. The Sunday Times also named her one of the 25 most inspiring people aged 30 and under in the UK and Ireland.

She was named one of Harper’s Bazaar UK’s 2024 Women of the Year and continues to be hailed as a rising star in television. While she has celebrated a fruitful career, she has been battling with her mental health behind the scenes.

In 2022, she opened up to The Times about seeking therapy for depression and anxiety, as well as dissociating and repressing her emotions. She candidly shared: “I don’t remember a lot of 2019 because I was cut off emotionally from everything. When you cut yourself off from the pain and the hurt and the loneliness, you also cut yourself off from every positive feeling that you could experience.

“That sort of anhedonia — the lack of pleasure, no matter what you do — is something I experienced.” When Mod played Shruti in This Is Going To Hurt, her experiences with anxiety and depression were something she could relate to in real life.

She also spoke out about the “imposter syndrome” she experienced during her next big break in Netflix’s adaptation of One Day. She admitted she almost passed on the role, saying she was reluctant to even audition for the part of Emma.

She previously told Glamour: “I always have imposter syndrome, always. Even when I’m not even doing anything remarkable. I feel like I shouldn’t be here, and everyone’s looking at me and thinking I’m an imposter. I just thought it’d be a massive waste of everyone’s time if I even entertained it.”
