Srinagar: An 83‑year‑old tourist from the United States, John David Anderson, died early Wednesday after suddenly falling ill while staying on a houseboat anchored on Srinagar’s iconic Dal Lake.

Anderson, who was visiting Kashmir with his wife, Judith Anne McCarthy, reportedly began experiencing acute discomfort in the middle of the night. His condition worsened rapidly, prompting those around him to rush him to a nearby private hospital. Despite the urgent medical attention, doctors declared him dead on arrival.

Officials said that Anderson and his wife had been on a leisure trip, enjoying the scenic Kashmir’s famed houseboat hospitality when the unexpected medical emergency struck. His death has cast a pall of sadness over the houseboat community, which frequently hosts international travellers and prides itself on offering a serene and memorable experience.

Police have taken cognizance of the incident and initiated formal proceedings to determine the exact cause of death. While there is no immediate indication of foul play, investigators will examine medical, environmental, and situational factors to understand what led to Anderson’s sudden collapse. The inquiry aims to provide clarity and ensure that all necessary protocols are followed in such sensitive cases involving foreign nationals, an official said.
