An American woman named Kathleen recently moved to London and was excited to visit M&S for the first time – but her expat reaction showed she was left ‘shook’ by far more than just the food

There are a lot of things to get used to when moving to a new country, from learning how to navigate the public transport system, to finding friends, or opening up a new bank account. But there are also plenty of fun new discoveries in store, such as exploring shops you don’t have back home.
In the UK, many Brits rave about Marks & Spencer, as their new products often sell out once shoppers start talking about them. But if you don’t live near one, it can feel like you’re missing out on something. So when an American woman named Kathleen moved to London earlier this month, she quickly made the decision to visit her nearest M&S store to see what all the fuss was about.
“Okay, this is sort of embarrassing to admit, but I have literally never even heard of M&S until yesterday because I saw it on my TikTok,” Kathleen admitted at the start of her video. “So we’re gonna go check it out and see what all the hype is about. I have no idea what to expect. All I know is that the cookies are good, so I think I have to get one.”
American blown away when visiting M&S for the first time
As she stepped inside the main store, she was immediately taken aback by what greeted her, saying it wasn’t remotely what she’d anticipated, as she was astonished to discover it isn’t just a food store, but also stocks clothing, likening it to a shopping centre rather than a single shop. While the clothing range failed to win her over at first after having spotted a pair of jeggings, she later stumbled across some items that caught her eye, declaring the store had ‘redeemed itself’.
“I apologise for the immediate judgment from the jeggings. Definitely looking up,” Kathleen said, before heading down to the food hall.
“I’m just, like, confused how people compare this to Trader Joe’s, because this is more like, I don’t know. We don’t have anything like this,” she added as she made her way down the escalator.
Once she reached the food section — which Kathleen was stunned to discover sat right next to the baby aisle — her gaze landed on the iconic Percy Pig sweets. “Are they good?” she wondered. “It looks like it’s popular because there’s so many different kinds, I think. I feel like I have to try these.”
As for her initial thoughts on the food hall, Kathleen was instantly won over by how well-organised everything was, marvelling at how neatly the shelves had been stocked. “Kudos to whoever works here,” she added.
However, upon heading over to the freezer aisle, she came across something that left her baffled — the various names given to chips. She couldn’t quite work out what distinguished French fries from chips, or why waffle fries were called fries rather than chips.
American claims to be ‘M&S no. 1 fan after first visit
She then set about picking up a handful of items that took her fancy, including a four pack of mini pizzas, crumpets, strawberry jam, and packages of microwave rice. Kathleen then drew attention to the wide range of Percy Pig merchandise on offer, remarking: “Percy Pig must be, like, a big thing, so now I know.”
Clearly won over by the store, she enthused: “They have so much here, I’m actually shook. Like, I am an M&S number one fan.”
She was left baffled once more, though, upon heading down the yoghurt aisle, puzzled as to why the packaging didn’t feature a re-sealable lid. “Like, what do you guys do?” she wondered.
Just when she thought she’d seen it all, she stumbled upon one of the most beloved sections of any M&S food hall — the picky bits aisle. She said: “They’re not very, like, snacky, but I wonder which one’s the best.”
She settled on the classic sausage rolls, before finding herself equally bewildered by the chilled desserts aisle and, later, the dip aisle. “Okay, we need to get on this level,” she told viewers, struggling to decide which items to try.
She also made a beeline for the bakery section to pick up a pack of the much-loved cookies. “Okay, now we’re going to the checkout because I cannot spend anything else right now, and I have to walk home with this, so we’re done for now,” Kathleen said.
