For years, Bhagwan Mallick has been a familiar figure on the streets of Kolkata, playing his violin to earn a modest living. The 80-year-old musician, who continues to perform despite age-related challenges and financial hardship, has now found widespread recognition after a video documenting his life went viral on social media.
The video, shared by content creator Aradhana Chatterjee, captured Mallick’s daily struggle and unwavering passion for music. According to Chatterjee, Mallick lost his parents at a young age and learned to play the violin from his father. After his father’s death, music became his only source of livelihood.
The touching story caught the attention of industrialist Anand Mahindra, who shared the video on social media and expressed his desire to help the veteran musician. Mahindra also sought details on how people could support Mallick, prompting a wave of public interest and generosity.
Mallick, who reportedly earns only around Rs 100 a day, is often seen performing near New Town Bus Stand, the DLF subway and New Town Art Street in Kolkata. Despite failing eyesight and an old, damaged violin, he has continued to play music on the city’s streets to make ends meet.
Following the video’s circulation, supporters came forward with donations, helping raise around Rs 1 lakh for the elderly artist. Chatterjee also presented him with a new violin, replacing the worn-out instrument he had relied on for years.
The overwhelming response has transformed Mallick’s story from one of quiet perseverance into a symbol of resilience, proving how social media can bring long-overdue recognition and support to deserving individuals.
