Vijayawada: The Andhra Pradesh High Court has questioned the authority of the then public prosecutor to file a criminal petition in a Guntur court against Jana Sena chief K. Pawan Kalyan.

The petition had been filed in connection with PK’s remarks on AP’s missing women. The court said the GO in this respect lacked rationality, and posted the next hearing to April 23.

A single judge bench of Justice Yadavalli Lakshmana Rao held a hearing here on Thursday on the matter and asked how the public prosecutor could file a criminal petition against the Jana Sena chief, who at that time was not a public representative.

Notably, the Jana Sena chief during his Varahi Yatra in 2023 stated in Eluru that a large number of girls and women were missing and alleged that some “volunteers” were behind it. The state had witnessed protests at several places over such remarks from PK.

The then YSRC government directed the then public prosecutor to file a criminal petition in a court in Guntur and issued the contentious GO.

After the alliance government assumed power, the then public prosecutor filed a petition in the court to withdraw the prosecution against Pawan Kalyan. Accordingly, the court in Guntur granted the permission.

However, a criminal revision petition was filed by K Sarala and another woman, challenging the Guntur court order to withdraw the prosecution.

In the course of the hearing, advocate general Dammalapati Srinivas argued that the Guntur court issued the order to withdraw prosecution after taking into consideration various factors.
