Vijayawada: Andhra Pradesh government is taking up several healthcare programmes for the benefit of the aged persons during October in the state.
Health minister Satya Kumar Yadav, in a statement issued here on Wednesday to mark the United Nations International Day of Older Persons, stated their healthcare programmes for elderly include identification of health issues of aged persons in advance and provide necessary healthcare.
Those aged over 60 years would be extended special healthcare at all health centres, beginning from primary health centres to the district hospitals. At district hospitals, special wards would be set up for aged persons. Physiotherapy would be given to those unable to move properly, so that they are rehabilitated. Special wards would be set up for the elderly in area hospitals.
The minister said a team of expert doctors who visited 74 government-recognised old age homes found health, mental and lifestyle issues. 18.8 per cent of the people surveyed suffered from depression while 9.8 per cent frequently lost control over their body and fell down. 7.5 per cent face memory-related issues, while 2.1 per cent face a combination of these issues.
Satya Kumar said these patients have been provided counselling, medical treatment, and other support to overcome their difficulties.
In 2025–26, health tests of 1.10 crore persons aged above 60 years had been carried out and requisite services provided to them. In 2026–27, as many as 52.79 lakh aged persons have been extended healthcare services, along with physiotherapy.
