Ant McPartlin has revealed the grim reason he and his wife Anne-Marie Corbett once left a “lovely restaurant” – even though his mother-in-law had offered to pick up the bill.
The 50-year-old telly host recalled what happened on his Hanging Out with Ant & Dec podcast with sidekick Declan Donnelly and went on to tell a disgusting story that shocked his 48-year-old wife Anne-Marie.
Stopping short of naming the restaurant – that had an open kitchen – Ant said: “So I went to this really lovely restaurant. It’s just been done up, right. You go in and you can see the chef’s cooking.”
He continued: “We go and sit down, and my mother-in-law’s like ‘have whatever you want, I’m ordering, have whatever, have the fry-up if you want.'” Then all of a sudden his wife Anne-Marie said ‘Oh my God’ really loudly while the waitress was running through the specials.
Describing his shock at Anne-Marie’s outburst, Ant went on: “My wife gets the menu like that [holding it to her face] and just goes ‘Oh my God,’ really loudly – and it shocks all of us.
“The waitress stops talking. Wilder [his two-year-old son with Anne-Marie] stops talking, mother-in-law stops talking… and she gives no explanation. She just goes ‘We’ll have croissants’. I’m like ‘What?’ And she looks at me and goes ‘We’ll have croissants.'”
Explaining what had happened, Anne-Marie then turned to Ant and said: “I’ve just seen the chef picking his nose. She said, ‘We can’t eat here now’.
“I said ‘We’ve just ordered croissants!’ She went: ‘We can’t. If that chef picks up the croissants with those bogey fingers, then I can’t.’ She goes, ‘We can’t eat here. I’m going to have to go and say.'”
Ant has been married to his former personal assistant Anne-Marie since the summer of 2021 when the pair tied the knot at St Michael’s Church, in the picturesque Hampshire village of Heckfield.
They got together in 2018 – three months after Ant announced plans to divorce his wife of 11 years, make-up artist Lisa Armstrong.
Anne-Marie, who has two children from her previous marriage, saw her own relationship break down around a year before. Though Ant’s ex Lisa, 49 – who once counted Anne-Marie as a friend – claimed to have only found out about their romance in the papers.
After a rocky few years, both appear to have moved on. Ant has credited Anne-Marie with helping him get his life back on track following a drink-drive crash in 2018. Opening up about his supportive spouse in an interview with The Sun, Ant shared: “Anne-Marie honestly is the fundamental reason for the great change in my life. She’s been my rock. She’s a beautiful soul. I’m in the best place I’ve been in my life, to be honest with you. It’s great.”
In the same interview, Ant, who described their love as ‘magic’, confirmed that they had only got together after they had broken up with their respective partners. He added: “We’ve worked together for many years. But something changed. She was single, I was single. We were going through turmoil. It was the last thing on either of our minds to get into a relationship. But there we were and we were like, ‘This felt so good, why deny it’.”
Ant’s ex Lisa has a heartbreaking time of late – despite a few relationships since their split – but exclusively told the Mirror last year how she was looking to move on after a “topsyturvy few years to say the least.” And she’s certainly not short of a bob or two after reportedly being awarded £31 million in her divorce settlement.
It’s said she’s wisely been investing the cash as she builds up an impressive property portfolio. She’s recently thought to have snapped up a four-bed house near Oxford for more than £700,000.
And she already has the former family home, a £2.3million five-bedroom west London mansion, which she kept as part of the divorce. Lisa also bought a £3.8million house in west London in 2020.
