âœI Donât Know What I Was Thinkingâ: Matt Damon Regrets Turning Down Ted

Over a Hollywood career spanning decades and earning him an Oscar, Matt Damon has made several memorable creative choices. But even the industry’s most seasoned actors aren’t immune to the occasional professional misstep. While his decision to turn down James Cameron’s Avatar has long been a subject of Hollywood folklore, the actor recently revealed another missed opportunity that he regrets: Seth MacFarlane’s 2012 comedy Ted.

In an interview with GQ, Damon reflected on reading the hilarious screenplay and somehow talking himself out of the lead role that eventually went to Mark Wahlberg. Looking back at his decision with disbelief, he said, “I don’t want to live with the regret, but I can tell you that I passed on ‘Ted,’ and I’ve never had this experience where I laughed so hard reading a script. I literally took it to dinner and was reading parts of it out to my friends at dinner. And then I just got too clever by half. I don’t know what I was thinking. I was like, ‘Well, maybe the teddy bear’s actually the best part.’”

Beyond missing out on a box-office success, the decision carries a more personal regret for Damon. Since Ted was filmed entirely in his hometown of Boston, accepting the role would have given him six precious months closer to his roots and family, including his father, who has since passed away. In hindsight, the opportunity to spend that time with him makes turning down the film all the more difficult to look back on.

Ever gracious about how things eventually worked out, Damon holds no grudges over the casting decision. Acknowledging Wahlberg’s performance, he said, “But, again, the right actor got the part. Mark [Wahlberg’s] is great, and the movie’s great, and I wouldn’t have made it any better.”

It is a candid admission from an actor who has enjoyed an extraordinary career but is also willing to acknowledge the opportunities he wishes he had taken. Sometimes, overthinking gets the better of everyone, even Jason Bourne himself.
