Amaravati: In good news for junior doctors in Andhra Pradesh, the state government has announced a hike in stipend for junior doctors, a demand that has been pending since January 2026. As per orders issued by the AP Government on Monday, the stipend has been increased by 10 percent for MBBS and BDS students, 5 percent for PG students, and 3.5 percent for Super Speciality students.
With this hike, the government will incur an additional expenditure of Rs 34.08 Crore. Junior doctors have welcomed the decision of the AP government.
The junior doctors who went on an indefinite strike last month initially sought a 30% increase before scaling down their demand. Citing financial constraints, the state offered a 3% annual stipend hike for junior/senior/super-speciality doctors and a 5% hike for interns, which the association rejected as inadequate. The strike involved nearly 9,000 junior doctors, severely disrupting non-emergency care, ICUs, casualty wards, and labor rooms across government teaching hospitals.
Last month, the government proposed to hike the stipend for junior doctors on a yearly basis, unlike the present every two years, with a hike of 5 % from January 1, 2026, and an annual hike of 3 % from next year.
