Vijayawada: In a major push towards sustainable urban transport and clean energy transition, the government has notified five Model E-Mobility Cities under the Andhra Pradesh Sustainable Electric Mobility Policy (4.0) 2024–29, paving the way for large-scale electric vehicle infrastructure and green mobility systems across the state.

The urban development department issued GO-Rt-499 operationalising the policy framework and strategic roadmap for implementation in urban local bodies.

The five cities that would spearhead the initiative are Visakhapatnam for north Andhra, Rajahmundry for the Godavari region, Vijayawada for central Andhra, Nellore for south Andhra and Tirupati for Rayalaseema.

The initiative aims to transform AP into a leading electric mobility hub by promoting EV adoption, clean transport infrastructure, green freight systems and sustainable urban planning. The long-term target is to achieve carbon neutrality in the transport sector by 2047.

Under the operational framework, these cities will witness development of high-density EV charging infrastructure, battery swapping stations, green routes, green channels and Zero Emission Zones. The plan also envisages integrated electric mobility ecosystems supported by renewable energy and smart urban mobility planning.

The state government has proposed a dedicated corpus fund of ₹250 crore under the policy, with ₹50 crore earmarked for each city to support infrastructure deployment, fleet electrification, grid strengthening, innovation pilots and consumer adoption initiatives.

The framework proposes one EV charging station for every 3×3 km grid in the notified cities and one charging station every 30 km along inter-city green corridors and highways.

City-specific interventions have also been planned.

Visakhapatnam will focus on green tourism mobility and electric BRTS corridors, while Vijayawada will develop model green routes and logistics-focused EV infrastructure. Rajahmundry will promote electrified river transport systems, Nellore will develop EV logistics for fisheries and coastal transport, and Tirupati will implement full electrification of Tirumala shuttle services and Zero Emission pilgrim zones.

Urban development minister Ponguru Narayana said the initiative would improve urban transport efficiency, reduce pollution and attract investments in EV manufacturing, charging infrastructure and allied sectors.

Principal secretary Suresh Kumar said Andhra Pradesh was moving towards an integrated electric mobility ecosystem aligned with the CM’s vision of green growth and future-ready urban development.

The director of town and country planning has also been directed to amend building regulations to include mandatory EV charging provisions in applicable buildings.
