Andhra Pradesh government is formulating an action plan to identify zoonotic diseases and to curb their spread.
The plan came up for discussion at a three-day workshop on “One Health” in Vijayawada that started on Tuesday. The Health department and the National Centre for Disease Control, with technical assistance from the US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, are preparing the comprehensive action plan to enable early detection and prevention of zoonotic diseases. John Hopkins Programme for International Education in Gynaecology and Obstetrics is facilitating the formulation of the plan.
Officials from several departments, including health, animal husbandry, forests and environment, agriculture, and fisheries, apart from representatives of academic institutions are taking part in the workshop to identify the zoonotic diseases that require priority attention, given their adverse impact on public health.
Experts reviewed an initial list of 45 diseases caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites on the first day. They shared their views on diseases like scrub typhus, melioidosis, anthrax, histoplasmosis, dengue, zika, yellow fever, Covid-19, and rabies, among others.
Authorities recommend strengthening of the disease surveillance systems for early detection of infections in both humans and animals, enhancing laboratory testing capacity, and to ensure coordinated inter-departmental responses immediately after detection of the diseases.
