Nancy Guthrie has been missing for three months now. But rather than losing public interest, it has gained attention due to her daughter, Savannah Guthrie, who is the co-anchor of Today. For those unaware, the 84-year-old went missing from her Arizona home in late January 2026. Despite an ongoing joint investigation by the local law enforcement and the FBI, there are still no confirmed suspects in the case. Meanwhile, public speculation about the alleged roles of Nancy’s elder daughter, Annie Guthrie, and Tommaso Cioni has sparked numerous theories.
Are Annie Guthrie and Tommaso Cioni innocent in the Nancy Guthrie missing case?
According to veteran reporter, Brian Entin, who spoke to Parade, he has been following every update in the case since Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance. He said that over the months, he saw no evidence suggesting that the couple had any involvement in the case. In turn, he urged the public to respect the facts stated by investigators rather than social media theories. In his words:
“The sheriff has made it clear that they are not suspects, that they’ve been cleared.”

Brian also mentioned that he tried to contact Annie Guthrie and Tommaso Cioni for an interview. But he did not find success in the same. Still, he has made it clear that their silence should not be interpreted as their guilt. At the same time, the veteran reporter called out the public backlash against the couple and mentioned how the situation was unfair and deeply painful. In his words:
“I feel bad for them, honestly. You think about the disappearance of Nancy, Annie’s mom, and then to be raked over the coals like that on the internet, it’s pretty terrible.”

Why are Annie Guthrie and Tommaso Cioni under suspicion?
Nancy Guthrie’s elder daughter, Annie, and her husband, Tommaso Cioni, were dragged into the case because they were the last known family members to see Nancy before she went missing. According to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, the 84-year-old had dinner at Annie and Tommaso’s home on January 31, 2026, the night she went missing. Some reports stated that she took an Uber to their house, while Tommaso dropped her off at home at 9:45 p.m. In turn, the events’ timeline brought them under scrutiny on the internet.

At the same time, some unverified claims and speculations from online commentator, Jonathan Lee Riches, added fuel to the fire. He alleged on X that Annie and Tommaso had asked Nancy for money before she disappeared. Also, she had turned down their request for it. However, there is no public evidence to support these claims. There are no police documents, court records, or major news reports confirming any financial dispute within the family. Still, the rumors quickly went viral. Initially, Ashleigh Banfield also mentioned that Tommaso might be a suspect on her YouTube channel, but called it a speculation.

Pima County Sheriff cleared Annie Guthrie and Tommaso Cioni’s roles in the case
Pima County Sheriff, Chris Nanos, who is investigating the case with the FBI, reportedly cleared all Guthrie family members of any involvement. It also included Annie Guthrie and Tommaso Cioni. He himself issued an official statement in February 2026 clarifying that all siblings and spouses were ruled out as suspects. Meanwhile, the FBI, which is working with local investigators, supported the stance. Savannah Guthrie has also defended her family.

Some reports suggested that she was deeply upset over the online accusations against her sister and brother-in-law. At the same time, she has publicly stood by the couple and emphasised how they would never harm her. Later, the whole family appeared together at a memorial near Nancy’s home, showcasing their unity. Clearing the Guthrie family, Chris Nanos said:
“The Guthrie family – to include all siblings and spouses – has been cleared as possible suspects in this case… To suggest otherwise is not only wrong but also cruel. The Guthrie family is victims plain and simple.”
