Speak to people who are watching Euphoria season 3, and you’ll probably find they all have wildly different takes on it. To some, it’s visually sumptuous; a kaleidoscopic delight that belongs on the big screen. To others, it’s a “grubby, humourless work of torture porn that’s obsessed with and repulsed by sex work”. To many—myself included—it’s a little of both: stunning to watch, but kind of gnarly and occasionally unwieldy. One thing we can all agree on, though? The baddest, best dressed and most transfixing character is the one we only hear from half an hour in: Maddy Perez, played by 35-year-old Alexa Demie. AKA the real MVP of Euphoria’s third season.
The action is set five years after the original characters left high school, and Maddy now works at a Hollywood talent agency. Despite her meagre income, her wardrobe is all sheer blouses, sleek essentials and gold crucifixes, her fringe gelled and pressed into a perfect “C” on her forehead. Euphoria’s costume designer, Natasha Newman-Thomas, told British Vogue that Maddy was her favourite character to dress—largely because Demie herself is a “fashion encyclopedia”. Eagle-eyed Redditors are already busy tracking down her on-screen outfits, probably because they feel the most “now”. “She’s pulling Jimmy Choo shoes from PR, and maybe her boss is throwing out her Gaultier suit that she had in the ’90s,” Newman-Thomas told the New York Times, explaining how an entry-level staffer appears so elevated.

Wardrobe aside, she’s the character you most want to be—or at least, have as your straight-talking best friend. Maddy is ambitious yet keeps her cool, astute yet nonchalant. She lands her job the way most of us can only imagine in our maladaptive daydreams: by tracking down her prospective boss and sitting next to her in a coffee shop. “I know my generation is entitled, but I don’t believe anybody owes me anything,” she drawls. “I’m not a victim, I won’t be an HR nightmare and I believe in capitalism.” Whether she says any of this sincerely is beside the point. She knows what a time-poor and generally over it Gen Xer wants to hear, and so she says what needs to be said.
Even Sydney Sweeney’s Cassie isn’t immune to the charms of her former frenemy. After inviting Maddy for a drink, ostensibly to apologise for stealing her boyfriend, she goes on to mine her for advice on how to make it as an OnlyFans girl-slash-influencer. She recognises that the opinion of Maddy—with her deft eye for detail and blunt delivery—could significantly boost her chances of success. “The market’s already saturated with a lot of girls like you,” says Maddy, resplendent in a vintage Dolce & Gabbana bustier and an overlined lip, before suggesting that Cassie doesn’t have good taste. “What do you mean ‘taste’?” Cassie asks. To which Maddy replies, one eyebrow raised: “The ability to discern quality, and a high aesthetic standard.”
