Ariana Grande and Ethan Slater have reportedly broken up after three years of dating. The couple, who met on the set of Wicked, had been said to be “on and off” for most of the year
Ariana Grande and Ethan Slater have reportedly called time on their relationship years after first crossing paths on the set of Wicked.
On Monday, June 8, a source revealed to PEOPLE that the 7 Rings hitmaker, 32, and the Gen V star, 34, have parted ways following three years together. “It’s amicable, they gave lots of time and careful consideration and decided to go their separate ways,” the insider disclosed. “They are still friends and very supportive of one another. They have been quietly broken up for several months.”
According to the source, Ariana is “doing great” as she embarks on her Eternal Sunshine tour, which kicked off just two days prior to the announcement. She’s also gearing up for the launch of her eighth studio album Petal, scheduled to drop on streaming platforms on July 31.
The pair appeared cordial as recently as March, when Ariana publicly backed Ethan ahead of his final performance in the off-Broadway production Marcel on the Train. Taking to her Instagram Story, she penned, “congratulations on a beautiful run of this very beautiful show, so very proud.”
However, despite the mutual admiration displayed throughout the Wicked: For Good promotional tour, an insider had hinted at difficulties in their relationship months beforehand, reports the Mirror US.
Just weeks prior to the Wicked sequel’s release, a source informed the Daily Mail they had been “on and off for most of this year.”
“They’ve both been running hot and cold with each other,” the source revealed. “At one time, they discussed marriage, but that is no longer on the table. They fell head over heels in love when they first hooked up. But those days are over.”
The insider characterised their romance as “more than a little toxic.”
The duo were reportedly “keeping it together,” though the source predicted they’d split following Wicked: For Good. It appears the couple were determined not to let history repeat itself with the postponement.
Merely a week after production wrapped in July 2023, it emerged that the actress had begun seeing Ethan, who portrays Boq in the musical.
Their romance instantly dominated the headlines, with fans expressing fury over the timing, given both stars had recently divorced their former spouses. This meant coverage of Wicked itself was overshadowed, leaving Universal Pictures’ bosses “worried” their coupling might damage the film’s prospects.
“When news of the relationship first broke, studio execs were extremely worried about how it would impact the film,” an insider told Daily Mail. After “feeling the heat,” Ariana and Ethan were told to “disappear for six months” to allow sufficient time for the controversy to subside ahead of the premiere.
The Mirror has contacted representatives of Ariana Grande for comment.
