Preview for Arsenal v Hull City
Arsenal are top of the Premier League, and on Saturday afternoon they have the chance to go six points clear, for a few hours at least. Mikel Arteta’s champions welcome newly promoted Hull City to the Emirates on the back of a superb week.
Last Sunday’s 1-0 win at Anfield was a statement. Kai Havertz finished Declan Rice’s low cross in the 16th minute, and Arsenal protected that lead for the rest of the afternoon. The goal also made Havertz the highest-scoring German player in Premier League history. Arsenal took full advantage of Manchester City’s home defeat to Brighton the day before, moving back to the top of the table.
They followed it up with a 2-1 win at Slavia Prague on Wednesday. Viktor Gyökeres scored one and set up Noni Madueke for the other, and the victory moved Arsenal up to third in the Champions League table.
Arsenal have now won eight of their nine league games, and they have done it with a return to what they do best: immense defensive solidity. They are on 24 points, and they could be six clear of City before their game at Nottingham Forest later on Saturday.
Hull have been one of the surprise packages of the season. Sergej Jakirović’s side came up through the play-offs and began their campaign with back-to-back wins over Manchester United and Coventry City. They are now winless in seven league encounters, but they have been hard to beat, with five draws, and they sit 11th on 11 points.
They aren’t just about defending either. Hull have scored 11 league goals, the same as Liverpool and only three fewer than Arsenal. But they will likely spend long periods without the ball: their average possession of 31.4% is among the lowest in the division, and they average only 3.4 shots on target per game.
History is heavily on Arsenal’s side. They have won 15 of their 18 meetings with Hull dating back to 1977, and Hull’s only win came at the Emirates in 2008, a 2-1 Premier League victory.
The Premier League Table
- Position 1, 2, 3, 4 : Promotion – Champions League (League phase)
- Position 5 : Promotion – Europa League (League phase)
- Position 18, 19, 20 : Relegation – Championship
Team News for Arsenal v Hull City
William Saliba is in contention for his first minutes of the season. The Frenchman has missed the entire campaign so far with a long-term back injury that was made worse at the World Cup, but he was an unused substitute in Prague and is expected to be in the matchday squad again. Arteta revealed that Saliba played in a game behind closed doors last week, so his return shouldn’t be ruled out.
Bukayo Saka (quad) is still out, Max Dowman is suspended, and Ezri Konsa is a doubt.
Havertz is expected to start up front ahead of Gyökeres, despite the Swede’s goal and assist in Prague.
Hull have a long injury list. Jack Butland, Eliot Matazo, Darko Gyabi, Charlie Hughes, Ilyas Ansah and Matt Targett are all expected to miss out, and Matt Crooks is suspended.
Oli McBurnie will lead the line for the Tigers, with Mohamed Belloumi their key creative threat.
