Preview for Arsenal v Lille
Arsenal haven’t lost a Champions League league-phase game since November 2024. On Tuesday night they put that run on the line against a Lille side they have never faced before, in their first home game of this season’s competition.
Mikel Arteta’s side made it 13 straight league-phase wins on matchday one, beating Napoli 1-0 in Naples thanks to Martin Odegaard’s strike 15 minutes from time. That scoreline flattered the hosts. Arsenal racked up 4.05 expected goals at the Estadio Diego Armando Maradona, their highest total in a single Champions League game in the club’s history.
The weekend brought relief after the 3-0 hammering at Brighton before the international break. Arsenal came from behind to beat Leeds 2-1 at the Emirates, ending the Whites’ unbeaten start to the season. James Justin gave Leeds the lead, but Riccardo Calafiori equalised and Bruno Guimarães won it. It wasn’t pretty, though. Arsenal were flat for the opening hour, and they have now conceded six goals in their last three games after letting in just one in their first six.
Lille arrive in London in good domestic form but with a point to prove in Europe. Davide Ancelotti’s side led Real Betis twice on matchday one at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy, only to throw it away in the space of 11 second-half minutes. Marc Bartra levelled, Troy Parrott won it, and Ethan Mbappé was sent off for elbowing Natan in the face.
Since then, Lille have picked up six points from three Ligue 1 games, and Dilane Bakwa’s goal in Saturday’s 1-0 win over 10-man Le Havre took them to within a point of leaders Monaco in second.
There’s also a familiar face in the Lille squad. Olivier Giroud, now 40, led the line against Le Havre and could make an emotional return to the Emirates. The French side’s record in England is dreadful, though. They have lost their last eight away games against English clubs, and their last win came in the Intertoto Cup at Aston Villa back in 2002.
The Champions League Table

Team News for Arsenal v Lille
Arsenal’s injury problems took another turn after the Leeds game. Piero Hincapié hurt his ankle during the post-match warm-down with the other substitutes and had to be carried off the pitch, and he is almost certain to miss out. Martín Zubimendi reportedly also picked up a knock in the warm-down, and his availability is now in doubt.
William Saliba (back) and Christos Tzolis (hamstring) remain out. There was better news before the Leeds game, when Declan Rice, Max Dowman and Ezri Konsa were all passed fit after withdrawing from their national squads. Rice played the full 90 minutes on Saturday, so he could be rested.
Arteta is expected to rotate. Calafiori is likely to keep his place at left-back with Hincapié out, but Guimarães, Eberechi Eze, Jurrien Timber and Viktor Gyökeres are all pushing for starts. Mikel Merino, who partnered Rice in midfield against Napoli, is an option if Zubimendi doesn’t make it.
For Lille, Mbappé is suspended for the first of three games, and he is also carrying an ankle injury that will keep him out for around three weeks. Defender Tiago Santos was stretchered off with a knee injury against Le Havre, and left-back Romain Perraud came off with a knock in the same game. Hamza Igamane is a long-term absentee with a cruciate ligament injury.
Centre-back Nathan Ngoy was rested at the weekend and is expected to return. Ayase Ueda and Benjamin André, who were also spared from the start on Saturday, should come back into the side, with Ueda likely to replace Giroud up front.
Expected line-ups for Arsenal v Lille
Arsenal: Raya; White, Konsa, Gabriel, Calafiori; Guimarães, Merino; Saka, Odegaard, Eze; Gyökeres
Lille: Özer; Ngoy, Nianzou, Alexsandro, Verdonk; André, Bentaleb; Bakwa, Haraldsson, Perrin; Ueda
Recent Form & Stats for Arsenal v Lille
Prediction for Arsenal v Lille
Arsenal have lost a little of their swagger in recent games but they should regain it against a Lille side that will pose a threat but ultimately lack the quality to challenge the English champions.
