ASK IRA: Did Doc Rivers cross a line in critique of Giannis moving on to Heat?

Q: It’s not IQ, it’s the ability to adapt. Giannis Antetokounmpo is very good at certain things, but also very bad at others. You have to have a certain team around him to let him do what he’s good at. – Iz.

A: This came in response to Doc Rivers’ comments on Bill Simmons’ podcast. The bottom line is what Giannis Antetokounmpo is good at far outweighs the shortcomings. But, yes, he does need at least one high-quality wing alongside, at least at the level of what he had in Milwaukee with Khris Middleton. So that is a factor, as well. Yet for all of Doc Rivers’ criticisms, the more cogent at the moment might be Giannis’ play as a supporting defender. The expected activity too often arguably has not been there. Age? Being asked to do too much on the other end? Teammates’ shortcomings? Answers are needed.

Q: The Heat do not have the roster to turn this around. Do you disagree? Front-office miscalculation? Coaching? Or is it the players? – Bob, Davie.

A: Disagree. When you have Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo, you assuredly should be better than this, particularly the loss to the shorthanded Hornets, the blow leads against the Mavericks and whatever that was on Thursday night against the Warriors. If Erik Spoelstra is cast as savant, and therefore paid like savant, then it requires doing savant-like things as coach. And, yes, the roster mix has not been good, which can be the risk of going with older players. So it’s an everyone thing, with ample blame to go around. But these players have shown they can be better. Spoelstra has shown he can be better. Pat Riley, Andy Elisburg and Adam Simon have shown they can be better. So . . . be better.

Q: I don’t know how much we expected out of Tim Hardaway Jr. I think his level of play only increases if the stars do. – Trill.

A: Which often is the case with complementary players. And there also is an adjustment period, with the passes to Tim Hardaway Jr. coming from different angles from Giannis Antetokounmpo than Tim received from Nikola Jokic with the Nuggets. It’s not as if Tim suddenly has forgotten what he is and who he is. So now it is up to Tim, teammates and coaches to find a way to make this right. With the Heat hard-capped, it’s not as if anyone of Tim’s pedigree is coming through that door.
