Guwahati: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday announced a series of festive relief ahead of Durga Puja by enhancing monthly financial assistance to 40 lakh Orunodoi beneficiaries from existing Rs 1250 to Rs 1500.
Mr Sarma told reporters that the Cabinet approved measures to ease the burden on common citizens and government staff during the festive season. Nearly 40 lakh Orunodoi beneficiaries will receive an enhanced monthly assistance of Rs 1,500 in October, up from the existing Rs 1,250. The chief minister described it as a special Puja offer to bring joy to families under the flagship scheme.
In another welfare move, the state cabinet which met on Thursday decided to reduce the subsidised rates of masur dal and sugar for NFSA ration-card holders. Beneficiaries will now get both commodities at Rs 100 per kg instead of Rs 105, following a drop in sugar prices.
He also announced that workers of 259 tea estates under the Assam Tea Company Limited (ATCL) will receive a 20 per cent Puja bonus. The state government employees have been granted an additional holiday on October 17, making it a five-day break including Sunday for the Durga Puja festivities.
