Quarterback Michael Penix Jr will return for the first time since suffering a serious knee injury when the Atlanta Falcons seek their first win of the season at the third attempt by visiting the Green Bay Packers on Thursday.
Having lost their opener 20-13 at the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Falcons were hammered 34-3 at home by the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.
“Mike’s looked good,” offensive coordinator Tommy Rees said last week. “He’s been really going here for a few weeks now.
“I didn’t know Mike pre-injury very well, except from afar. But he looks sharp, moving well. He has confidence in it. His arm talents is easily seen.
“In terms of the lower-body movement and his ability to play quick and do those things, Mike’s progressed really nicely.”
The Packers followed up a 39-22 defeat at the Minnesota Vikings by beating the New York Jets 20-17 through Trey Smack’s overtime field goal on Sunday.
Green Bay were 10 points behind during the fourth quarter but scored the final 13 points of the game and are now targeting a 13th successive win in their opening home game of the season, currently tying with the Miami Dolphins (1976-88) for the longest streak in NFL history.
“I’m just proud of how everybody stayed together and just kept fighting, even when it was tough,” head coach Matt LaFleur said of the win over the Jets.
“[We must] continue to fight, continue to battle… we were in a dogfight. That’s life in the NFL.”
Receiver Skyy Moore called the result a “great team win”. “It wasn’t perfect,” added Moore. “When the defense struggled, the offense had to pick it up or the special teams helped the offense and vice versa.”
