Visakhapatnam: A team of researchers at Andhra University has developed an early diagnostic kit for assessing the risk of atherosclerosis, a major cause of coronary artery disease.
The kit was designed by Manikanta Sodasani and Hemsai Yadav under the guidance of Dr Ravikiran Yedidi, founder of the Centre for Advanced-Applied Biological Sciences and Entrepreneurship laboratories functioning in the Zoology Department of Andhra University.
The diagnostic test is based on a simple blood sample. Dr Yedidi said only one ml of blood was required, which would be processed in the laboratory to extract proteins for analysis through a native zymogram. The results could help assess future risk of atherosclerosis.
Atherosclerosis is caused by thickening of the inner walls of arteries, leading to blockage of coronary arteries. If left untreated, it may require angioplasty, stent placement or bypass surgery.
Dr Yedidi said the research team had filed two patent applications for the new in-vitro diagnostic test. In collaboration with the Department of Cardiology at King George Hospital, researchers Alekhya Nagireddy and Soujanya Gondala evaluated the test using multiple patient samples and developed a working prototype.
He said the diagnostic kit would soon be commercialised through Andhra University Technology Transfer and introduced in the market. He added that early risk assessment could help individuals manage future atherosclerosis through diet and exercise.
