Visakhapatnam: Joint teams of Excise and Police personnel from Andhra Pradesh and Odisha destroyed 7,000 litres of fermented jaggery wash and 310 litres of illicitly distilled liquor during coordinated raids in Odisha’s Koraput district on Thursday.

The operation covered villages in Nandapur block along the interstate border.

Carried out under the direction of Enforcement director Rahuldev Sharma, it involved 53 personnel from the two states.

At Pradhaniputtu (Velamputtu), they destroyed about 3,600 litres of fermented jaggery wash used to produce illicit liquor and 160 litres of illicitly distilled liquor. Raids at Ondurugedda village led to destruction of another 3,400 litres of wash and 150 litres of illicit liquor.

Odisha Excise inspector Sudhar Kumar, sub-inspector Raju Kerit, and Paduwa police took part in the operation. The Andhra Pradesh contingent included Excise inspectors T.V.V.S.N. Achari, Jagadish, Tej, and Namrata, sub-inspectors Sridhar and Ganesh, and supporting staff.

Officials said joint enforcement drives would continue to curb the manufacture, storage, and transportation of illicit liquor in the border areas. They underlined that the operations are aimed at protecting public health, preventing deaths from consuming spurious liquor, and maintaining law and order.
