
A medical officer and a lab technician have been suspended, while the principal and a professor have been relieved and placed at the government’s disposal at Dr Nori Rama Sastry Government Ayurvedic College in Vijayawada in connection with a sexual harassment case.
AYUSH in-charge commissioner Ronanki Gopala Krishna said an inquiry was initiated following complaints of sexual harassment at the college.
Accordingly, medical officer Dr D. Mouli Naik and lab technician K.V. Subramanyam were suspended. College principal Dr K. Nirmala Jyothi Bai and professor K. Vijaya Kumari were relieved and surrendered to the government.
He added that G. Lakshmisha, NTR district collector, has been directed to conduct an inquiry through an independent committee.
House help arrested; stolen gold, silver recovered in Kurnool
A house help was arrested by IV Town police in Kurnool for allegedly stealing gold and silver ornaments worth several lakhs from her employer’s residence.
According to police, complainant Krishna Murthy Nagendra, a resident of Vivek Nagar near Surya Devalayam, reported that around 15 tolas of gold jewellery and 30 tolas of silver articles had gone missing from his house between April 21 and 27. He suspected the involvement of a domestic worker or a vegetable vendor who frequently visited the residence.
Based on the complaint, a case was registered by IV Town circle inspector Vikram Singh, and an investigation was launched. During the probe, police questioned two suspects and identified the accused as Parveen, a house help residing in the One Town area, who had been working at the complainant’s house for the past three months.
Police arrested the accused at her residence on Saturday. During interrogation, she confessed to the offence. The stolen property — 15 tolas of gold ornaments and 30 tolas of silver items — was recovered from her possession.
Man survives crocodile attack in Tungabhadra river
A man had a narrow escape after being attacked by a crocodile while fishing in the Tungabhadra river in Kurnool district near Kosigi mandal. The incident, which occurred five days ago, came to light belatedly.
According to the victim and villagers, Badri Pedda Eeranna, a resident of Chintakunta village, had gone fishing with a group in the river near the Tungabhadra railway bridge towards Hanumapuram.
After casting nets, Eeranna entered the water to check the catch when a crocodile suddenly attacked him, grabbing his left leg and dragging him some distance into the river.
Hearing his cries, eight others rushed into the water and rescued him from the crocodile’s grip.
Doctors said Eeranna sustained severe injuries to his left leg and required 18 stitches.
The incident has caused concern among local residents who frequently visit the river for fishing.
Tech student killed in road accident in Eluru district
A tech student died in a road accident in Mudinepalli mandal of Eluru district on Saturday.
According to Mudinepalli station house officer V.S. Veerabhadra Rao, the deceased, Navudu Bhanu Jayaram Prakash (28), a resident of Vanukuru village, was pursuing an MS in Paris. He had come to Gudivada to attend his cousin’s wedding on Friday night.
After the event, while travelling by car to Gannavaram airport to return to Paris, the vehicle, driven by his friend G. Naveen, collided with a tipper lorry coming from the opposite direction.
Both Prakash and Naveen were injured and shifted to a local hospital. Prakash succumbed to his injuries, while Naveen is undergoing treatment.
Two boys drown in pond at Saidapuram; illegal pits blamed
Two schoolboys drowned in a village pond in Saidapuram mandal of Nellore district on Saturday after slipping into deep pits allegedly dug illegally for soil extraction.
According to locals, Challa Chandu (14), an eighth-class student, and Vakati Lucky (13), a seventh-class student, had gone to the pond for a swim around 1 pm when they accidentally slipped into the pits and drowned.
Villagers rushed to the spot and pulled the boys out, but they were found dead. The incident cast a pall of gloom over the village.
Grief-stricken families and residents blamed unregulated soil excavation in the pond for the tragedy.
