Bottles of baby bottle cleaner have been withdrawn from the UK market. The move was made after the presence of insects was identified in the liquid.
Major brand Milton International SAS pulled several 500ml bottles from shelves after it made the discovery. An alert posted to the Office for Product Safety & Standards (OPSS) has confirmed that the issue affects six bottles in total.
Various batch numbers and expire dates in 2029 have been affected, with the full list available on the OPSS website. Only the affected bottles have been withdrawn from the market and are no longer available to buy.
The product is classed as a “dishwater liquid for cleaning baby bottles”. It is sold at many major retailers including Boots, Waitrose, Asda, Morrisons and Ocado.
Milton shared in its statement that a “full investigation” was launched following the discovery of insects in the small number of bottles. This included an ISO standards compliant laboratory microbiological test that revealed “there is no risk to babies’ health or safety.”
Affected bottles were then withdrawn by the brand only as a “precaution”. New quality measures have also been introduced into the supply chain to ensure the issue “does not happen again.”
While some retailers who sold the baby bottle cleaner issued a full recall, Milton advised this was “not required” as there was “no safety risk”. It has since issued an apology to customers and contacted the relevant retailers to rectify the concern.
This does mean that the Milton Baby Bottle Cleaner may be unavailable to buy at certain stores. However, the brand is “working closely” with its partners to restore the supply “as quickly as possible.”
The full announcement, which was shared on the Milton website, read: “The safety of babies and the trust of parents are our highest priorities so we want to be open with you about a recent issue with Milton Baby Bottle Cleaner and what we have done about it.
“We identified the presence of insects in a small number of UK Milton Baby Bottle Cleaner bottles. As soon as we became aware we removed the affected products from sale and began a full investigation.
“This included conducting laboratory microbiological testing according to ISO Standards– which confirmed there is no risk to babies’ health or safety.
“There was some confusion with certain retailers issuing a notice requiring a full product recall from the public – we apologise for this – it was not required as there is no safety risk – we are in touch with the retailers concerned to rectify this.
“We have introduced new quality measures into our supply chain processes to ensure this does not happen again. Because we removed the affected products from sale as a precaution; UK Milton Baby Bottle Cleaner may currently be unavailable at some retailers.
“We are working closely with our partners to restore supply as quickly as possible and apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused. If you have any questions or concerns please contact us customerservices@ceutahealthcare.com.”
While there are no health risks associated with the Milton Baby Bottle Cleaner, parents and carers have been warned of a few other recalls that could pose a serious threat to little ones.
The Daily Record recently reported that ‘hundreds’ of viral squishy toys had been seized in several areas across the UK. The cheaper imitations of the TikTok-famed Squishy Dumplings and Needoh toys were found to potentially be contaminated with benzene.
Officers from Reading Borough Council raised concerns after noting that the toys featured a “strong chemical odour”, with many also lacking any of the essential safety information that would mean it complies with strict UK laws.
