Irish actor Barry Keoghan has faced severe online harassment regarding his physical appearance. The actor became a victim of cyberbullying after his breakup with singer Sabrina Carpenter in 2024. Barry and Sabrina were first linked in 2023. The couple dated for a year before calling it quits in 2024. However, after their breakup, Barry faced a lot of criticism over rumours of cheating on Sabrina.

When he appeared on the podcast Friends Keep Secrets, Barry spoke about the online bullying he faced after his breakup with Sabrina Carpenter. The Saltburn actor asked people not to jump to conclusions without knowing the whole truth. Keoghan added that “having a relationship in the public eye” can be challenging.
Barry also revealed that the attack was not just limited to social media and that people also dragged his parents into the matter. Calling the whole experience ‘disgusting and vile’, Barry shared:
“I’m not asking for people to become my fan and like me because that’s not normal either. But I’m asking for people to stop assuming and also stop jumping on this narrative and attacking me and dragging me down in any way you can, involving my parents who are no longer with me… just absolutely disgusting and vile. There are videos on TikTok literally going, ‘I hate him.'”
Keoghan himself had a disturbing childhood as his parents were addicts and died from drug use. After his parents’ death, Keoghan and his brother spent years in foster care before being taken in by their grandmother and aunt. In the podcast, the actor revealed that he never wished to have a ‘pity card’ but couldn’t understand people’s hatred towards him, who himself battled substance abuse.

The abuse suffered by Keoghan was relentless, and social media users commented on his facial features and physical appearance, leaving abusive messages for him. The social media harassment soon turned into in-person intrusion, with people stalking him and intruding on his privacy. Soon, the actor released a statement on X and revealed his departure from social media.
In his post, Keoghan said he received messages that included “absolute lies, hatred, disgusting commentary about my appearance, character, how I am as a parent and every other inhumane thing you can imagine.” Penning details about the stalking, Keoghan revealed that people turned up at his grandmother’s door and also started stalking his young son. Keoghan also shared how people called him a “heroine baby”.
Previously, Keoghan spoke about the trolls targeting his son, which led him to stop posting anything about his child. On Louis Theroux’s podcast, Keoghan shared that his son’s absence from social media led people to draw a narrative. The trolls went on to call him an ‘absent father, shit, deadbeat dad’ and more disgusting things.” The constant scrutiny made him “shy away,” feel unsafe leaving his house, also wanting to avoid public appearances.
