CHENNAI: The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, on Tuesday issued an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall in several districts, including Chennai, till Thursday, as two weather systems are brewing over the Bay of Bengal.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast the formation of a low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal, while another system is likely to develop over the southeast and adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal around October 23. The latter system is expected to move north-northwestwards and intensify further.

The developments come as the northeast monsoon gains momentum over Tamil Nadu, bringing widespread rainfall, particularly across coastal districts, the Cauvery delta and the Western Ghats. Chennai also experienced widespread rain on Tuesday.

An upper-air cyclonic circulation over the Gulf of Thailand and Myanmar is likely to move into the north Andaman Sea by Wednesday morning, the IMD said. Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to form over the southeast and adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal around October 23.

In another development, an upper-air cyclonic circulation over the southwest Bay of Bengal off the north Tamil Nadu coast currently extends over the southwest Bay and adjoining Tamil Nadu coast. Under its influence, another low-pressure area is likely to form over the same region within 24 hours, the RMC said.

A trough extending from this circulation towards north coastal Andhra Pradesh is also influencing the prevailing weather conditions.

The RMC has issued an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall in Chennai and several other districts on Tuesday, indicating the possibility of intense spells that could disrupt normal life.

A yellow alert has been issued for heavy rainfall at isolated places in Ranipet, Kanchipuram, Kallakurichi, Tiruchy, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Pudukkottai, Sivagangai, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari districts.
