This afternoon will see Xabi Alonso take his press conference ahead of Chelsea’s Sunday game against Sunderland, and we expect some injury updates from him.
Number one question is about who will play in goal, with Emi Martinez training fully this week. But there’s also potentially a story about an injury to winger Geovany Quenda.
Nizaar Kinsella reported that the summer signing “missed training today and yesterday due to a minor muscle issue.”
The youngster is “still working to return” for Sunday’s game.

It’s a shame for Quenda, who is clearly impressing Alonso overall. The fact he was chosen ahead of Estevao to face Tottenham and as a sub against Liverpool has mainly been looked at in the context of the Brazilian’s lack of game time – we should acknowledge it’s impressive from the Portuguese to jump the queue for minutes there.
His ability to play on both sides and to play as a wing back (or at least a winger with more defensive duties) is clearly really handy for the Spanish coach given his current setup.

Liam Rosenior has given his first quotes since leaving Chelsea – there’s some interesting insight there on how he thought things had gone.
Mamadou Sarr is out and about in the big wide world now, playing well for Real Sociedad on loan. The start of his 2026 was pretty hellish though, as he explains.
