BBC Radio 2 DJ Vernon Kay almost made a major on-air blunder – but he insists it wasn’t his fault as he feared receiving “loads of complaints” from angry listeners
DJ Vernon Kay claimed “it’s not my fault” as he feared “loads of complaints” when he almost made an on-air blunder. Like much of the rest of the country, the BBC Radio 2 colleagues were chatting about the new series of Celebrity Traitors.
The show launched last week, and Withnail and I actor Richard E Grant already looks like he’ll steal the show. Other big names include former EastEnders star Ross Kemp, presenter Maya Jama and comedian Miranda Hart.
Despite the show only kicking off last week (and with only two episodes aired), one celebrity has already left the programme (or murdered in Traitors parlance). And this almost landed Vernon in hot water when he nearly gave the game away on his show.
Speaking to his team on yesterday’s (Tuesday, October 6) episode, Vernon asked: “Has anyone left The Traitors castle yet?” His colleague Ellie Brennan replied: “Not yet, but we mustn’t do spoilers.”
Producer Phil McGarvey then piped up: “Someone has left The Traitors castle. Catch up on iPlayer.”
Vernon,52, was then very relieved that he didn’t gave any spoilers away. He said: “Good job the mic was down then. Good job I was quick on the fade, we would have loads and loads of complaints on the texts. Well done pal.”
His producer then said he had forgotten what had happened despite there been only two episodes.
Vernon promised he won’t ruin it for any would-be viewers who don’t yet know what has happened. He said: “Right, chill. It’s not my fault people don’t get it within 24 hours. When was it last on?”
Ellie told him it was last Friday, to which Vernon responded: “Well, you’ve had lots of time. I won’t spoil it. I won’t spoil it. What a show.”
It comes after Vernon shouted ‘why would you do that’ at his co-star after a blunder live on air in a previous show.
During one of his show’s last week (Thursday, October 1), he paid tribute to his team while speaking to Ellie. He said: “That’s how tight we are as a team. We have the confidence to communicate in such a manner with each other.
“Some people said that this show is just organic because we don’t have a script and it really is. It’s audio manure, that’s what we are. We flourish we fertilise. We just come up with ideas. We’re so organic.”
After making this final comment, Vernon and his team fell into laughter, causing Vernon to joke as he tried to move on with the show.
He said: “I think someone spiked the air conditioning. Here’s Noel Gallagher with all the details that you need to come [silence] the top.”
It was this sudden blip that raised alarms with Ellie, whom Vernon referred to as Brennan, who asked jokingly: “Did you just put the microphone down mid talking?”
Vernon, realising his blunder, rebutted light-heartedly about one of the ‘rules of radio’: “Why would you do that? Rule number one in radio.
“Rule number one in radio alright. Brennan you’ve been in radio a while, you should know this one. Whenever there’s a blip, ok, blame it on someone going through a tunnel.”
Catch the next episode of Celebrity Traitors tomorrow (Thursday, October 8) from 8pm to 9.05pm on BBC One.
