Nicky Campbell was embroiled in a huge row after using a homophobic term in a work meeting. The BBC Radio 5 Live star used the term “p***ter” while he told an anecdote to colleagues.
The veteran presenter, who has been with the organisation for almost four decades, used the outdated homophobic slur a number of times during his story. It’s said there were six editors in the chat when the incident occurred.
The Mirror has learned that Nicky was recounting an incident where someone had used the offensive term. Shortly after becoming aware that some people had been offended by the language used, he apologised to the whole team face-to-face in a meeting.
According to the Daily Mail, a source claimed that a number of those presenters were confused by his actions. They said: “At the time, about half the people were saying, ‘What the f***?’, but others were laughing about it.
“But there’s been a growing backlash since then. There are people who could be really offended by the comment.”
Campbell first began his role with the organisation in 1987 with Radio 1. He moved to BBC Radio 5 Live in 1997, working across a number of the channel’s programmes.
For 20 years who was part of the coveted Breakfast slot. He left the role in 2021 and joked he would now “get a bit more sleep”. His weekday show, called Your Call, now airs between 9am and 11am.
Last month, Nicky’s daughter was rushed to the hospital after being hit by an e-bike in south London. Lilla, 26, needed medical attention after suffering severe injuries following the accident.
The incident happened when she was in Peckham with her sisters, Breagha, 27, Kirsty, 24, and Isla, 22. The Long Lost Family star’s daughter faced a further ordeal after being taken to King’s College Hospital by paramedics.
Nicky explained the situation at the time. He said it had been a “long and emotional night.”
Speaking on social media, he said: “‘My daughter Lilla was hit by an e bike hit and run last night in Peckham – hopefully there is CCTV. She is badly injured but now at home. It could have been so much worse. We are incredibly lucky.”
He added: “Then when she and her sisters and a friend arrived at A&E a drunk entered the trauma room where they were and exposed himself to them. The police were there and he has been arrested.
“The police were magnificent. I spoke to them when I arrived at 3.15am and he is now in custody.”
