An actress and dancer from the BBC’s iconic Hot Gossip dance troupe has died following an illness. Heather Alexander was an original member of the group, once dubbed “too sexy for TV” by moral campaigners. The troupe was choreographed by Arlene Phillips, 83, who later became a judge on Strictly Come Dancing.
The group, who performed fast and provocative dance routines, were a TV sensation in the 1970s and 1980s, wearing Lycra and lingerie-style outfits. In 1978 they gained a weekly slot on the hugely popular Kenny Everett Video Show on ITV and stayed with it when it switched over to the BBC in 1981. They also danced live on Top of the Pops.
Heather also had a successful acting career outside of Hot Gossip working alongside TV greats like Sir David Jason in the stage production of Look, No Hans! in the West End in 1985 as well as appearing in the popular ITV cop show Makepeace and Dempsey.
Hot Gossip also got to No6 in the chart with the song I Lost My Heart to a Starship Trooper, performed by Sarah Brightman. Heather left the group in 1981.
Her death was announced by the theatrical agency Goldmans Management, who wrote: “It is with much sadness that we bring you the news that our wonderful client Heather Alexander passed away last weekend following a short illness.
“Heather was a fighter to the end and lived her life to the full, not letting on how poorly she was. In the last year she was still fully committed to her wonderful one woman shows, getting 5 star reviews and making plans for their future runs.
“Heather had a wonderful and varied career, from strutting her stuff with Hot Gossip on the BBC, performing alongside household names on the West End in plays and most recently creating her own works such as Havisham and Becoming Mrs Danvers.”
The post, which included a picture of the late star added: “She had an infectious energy and a huge sense of fun, we will miss her very much.”
Heather founded the annual Hastings Fringe Festival in 2015, which helps to develop emerging theatre talent and celebrates social diversity.
