EXCLUSIVE BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show presenter Sara Cox has confessed she sometimes has to ‘leg it out of the studio’ before talking to guests
Sara Cox has been entertaining listeners on BBC for over two decades – and she’s now admitted to a secret hack when she’s behind the decks. The DJ recently returned to the coveted BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show, replacing Scott Mills on the morning slot.
But after moving from her role on Drivetime – a position Angela Scanlon now fills – the 51-year-old admits she is often forced into carrying out a hidden habit when her microphone is off.
Speaking exclusively to the Mirror, Sara confirmed that food is forbidden from the studio during airtime. But being in a breakfast slot sometimes sees the star’s hunger get the better of her. “It’s such a busy show,” she tells us as she describes her current gig as her “dream role”.
“We’re not allowed food in the studio. So, if I’ve got a listener waiting to come on and play a feature, I usually say hi to them and confess that I’ve got to leg it out of the studio and eat some apple and peanut butter, something like that.”
She jokes: “If I’ve got a long song that’s a four-minute banger, I’m fine. You’ve never seen a woman eat apple and peanut butter so quick!”
Sara went on to reveal what she thinks has been the secret to her success on the airwaves. “You can’t be afraid to be yourself,” she says.
“And I’m really myself, and that includes being a little bit silly, which can make you a little bit vulnerable really, because I’m certainly not cool when I’m on air.
“And when we have new people on the team, I’m quite shy and I’ll be like, “Oh, can I just get used to them before they’re allowed in the studio?” Because actually, when I’m on air, I’m being so silly that actually you feel self-conscious if you’ve got new people around you.
“And when you’re on, you’re just broadcasting, you don’t think that you’re broadcasting to over six million people. You feel like you’re just talking to one friend, or to a bunch of mates. So, I think the key, yeah, is just to fully, fully be yourself, and, you know, try and get a laugh if you can.
“I think with breakfast, people want a laugh. You know, it might be pouring down with rain, they might have a meeting with their boss, an’ arse thing, the kids might have been playing up, the dog might have chewed a new shoe. So, it’s my job to sort of pick everyone up and dust them down every morning and send them out into the world.”
Sara was speaking as part of a campaign to get households to switch out older smart meter hardware for new kit. She says the data discovered just how much easier technology makes our life.
On average, Brits save around six hours every week and rely on seven devices , with smartphones crowned as the top time-saving gadget. Research also revealed 76% of Britons agree technology has simplified their lives, with the kitchen identified as the area of the home where the greatest amount of time is conserved.
“It’s sort of a celebration of technology, and about keeping your technology up-to-date,” Sara says of the campaign. “And smart meters are a brilliant example of how it’s important just to keep up-to-date.
“The message is, if people are contacted by their energy supplier about switching older smart meter hardware for new kit, they really must make that appointment. It’s not going to cost them anything.
“And then if they switch out the older stuff for new kit, they can continue benefiting from accurate bills and access to energy reward schemes and tariffs and all that good stuff.”
And she adits it was fascinating to discover that 49% of Gen Z can’t imagine waiting for their favourite song to come on the radio, while. 86% of baby boomers remember rewinding cassette tapes by hand.
She adds: “I don’t know about you, I really struggled with cassettes. And everybody’s busy these days and technology just makes life a lot easier. So I guess we’re showing a little bit of love for those bits of technology that just make things less complicated so you can get on with your day.”
