Emily Henry’s Beach Read is being adapted for screen starring Phoebe Dynevor and Patrick Schwarzenegger, following two rival writers whose summer swap sparks romance and creative chaos.

One of the most popular romance novels of the last decade is officially heading to the screen, with Emily Henry’s Beach Read set to be adapted into a feature film – and anticipation is already building among fans of modern romantic comedy.

Originally published in 2020, Beach Read follows two writers who find themselves living in neighbouring beach houses after returning to the same coastal town for the summer. January, a romance novelist, is struggling to write after personal loss, while Gus, a literary fiction author, is dealing with his own creative stagnation.

In an effort to break through their respective blocks, the pair strike a deal: they will swap genres. January will attempt literary fiction, while Gus will try his hand at romance. What begins as a professional challenge slowly evolves into something more emotionally complex, as both characters are forced to confront grief, ambition and their assumptions about each other.

The novel quickly became a favourite among romance readers for its blend of humour, emotional depth and slow-burn tension, helping cement Henry as one of the defining authors of the BookTok era.

The project has gained momentum thanks to its casting, with Bridgerton star Phoebe Dynevor confirmed to play January Andrews, a romance novelist dealing with grief, creative burnout and a complicated relationship with love itself.

Opposite her will be Patrick Schwarzenegger as Augustus “Gus” Everett, a literary fiction writer and former college rival. Schwarzenegger’s casting was first reported by Deadline, which also detailed an extensive search process for the role.

According to director and screenwriter Yulin Kuang, casting Gus involved a six-month process of auditions, tape reviews and chemistry reads with Dynevor after she was confirmed as January.

Kuang described Schwarzenegger as a standout from the early stages of casting, noting that there was something “unforgettable” about his perspective on romance and emotional depth. While multiple actors were considered, the final decision came down to on-screen chemistry – and Kuang said the moment the pair read together, there was an immediate sense of connection.

She later described the dynamic between them as “electric”, adding that the pairing felt right not just on paper, but in performance. The film is being produced by 20th Century Studios, and continues a broader wave of Emily Henry adaptations currently in development. Several other Emily Henry novels are also in development, including film adaptations of People We Meet on Vacation, Book Lovers and Funny Story, with Happy Place being turned into a TV series.

As of now, there is no confirmed release date for the adaptation, although production is understood to be in early stages. Industry speculation suggests filming will take place over the coming year, with a possible release following shortly after, depending on production timelines.

The adaptation is part of a wider trend of romance novels being brought to screen, with streaming platforms and studios increasingly investing in stories that already have built-in online audiences. Henry’s work in particular has proven especially popular, with readers drawn to her mix of sharp dialogue, emotional storytelling and modern romantic tropes.

Recent commentary around similar adaptations has noted that while translating romance novels to screen can be challenging, casting remains one of the most crucial elements. As one critic observed, success often hinges on whether the central pairing feels authentic – something fans will be watching closely here.

With a strong cast, a director already familiar with Henry’s work, and an established global fanbase, Beach Read is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched romance adaptations in development.
