Kakinada:With the Rabi paddy harvesting underway, demand for paddy sheaves has increased for a variety of reasons from various sections of people.
Among them are bird lovers who are making decorations out of them in front of their houses. Not only are these attracting their neighbours and relatives, birds are arriving to feed the grains within the paddy sheaf. Their pleasant chirping is making kids rush to birds and frolic. Apart from paddy sheaves, bird lovers are also putting some water for the avian to drink.
Formerly, farmers sold paddy sheaves in a plain bundle. Now, these are being bundled up as garlands, plaits, and in round shape. Each bundle is being sold for ₹300 to ₹500 depending on the size.
In the past, paddy sheave bundles used to be hanged in front of the house during house warming. But now, they have become a decorative item.
Yalla Rambabu, a farmer from Shehapuram village in Pedapudi mandal, said some people are placing orders to buy the sheaves which they previously gave away for free. But now, he is charging ₹50 for a tiny bundle.
Mummidi Prasad of Gonchala village in Samalkot mandal of Kakinada district sells paddy sheave bundles in different forms in his pull-cart. He said thoranam-type sheave bundles are being tied in front of the doors. Plait model sheaves are being hung on both sides of doors. Round-shaped bundles are being over a nail to feed birds.
Prasad said there are also garland-type sheaves for placing them around the neck of spiritual gurus. He said that he is on average selling 5 to 15 sheave bundles per day.
