Do you remember when taupe nail polish became a thing? Because I sure do! It was the dawn of the 2010s—2008 to be exact—and OPI launched a little shade called You Don’t Know Jacques! Shortly after that, Chanel dropped Particulière, and my world was officially rocked. When I saw Bella Hadid’s latest mani, I instantly flashed back to that era of my life (and its accompanying nail trends), and decided that a taupe manicure is just the thing for spring.
Hadid, who is currently in the south of France for the Cannes Film Festival, attended a Chopard gala looking like a golden goddess in a glittering gown that matched her golden-blonde hair. Instead of matching her nails to her hair to her dress, however, she chose a dark taupe, almost espresso brown shade that added a cool, grounding element to the movie-star glamorous ensemble.

The model’s nails were a medium length and filed into a soft almond shape, painted with several coats of a color that is best described “brown… but not.” Instead of a warm chocolate, they’re on the cooler side with a hint of gray and a teeny, tiny drop of lavender. Where red would have been a little too on the nose and sheer, naked nails would have been the more obvious choice—given how popular they are on red carpets of late—this unique shade has a rebellious streak and feels like a nod to Hadid’s earth-angel, cowgirl vibe too.
Thankfully, both OPI and Chanel still sell their taupe shades, and a ton of other brands to doo. If you like Hadid’s color of choice, try China Glaze’s Nail Lacquer in Weathered Bark or Manucurist’s Green Nail Polish in Freckles, which they describe as a “woody brown.” What’s cooler than an earthy spring manicure in a sea of pastels?
