In the middle of the madness, at the core of the craziness, Curtis Granderson snuck behind Daniel Murphy inside the closet-sized visitors clubhouse at Wrigley Field. This was late on the frosty Chicago night of Oct. 21, 2015, and the Mets had just closed out the Cubs 8-3, wrapping up a sweep of the NLCS and earning a berth in the World Series.
Granderson had a magnum of champagne in each hand.
Soon, the contents of those bottles were cascading off Murphy’s head and shoulders, and Granderson yelled, “To the mighty Bambino!”
A few seconds later, blinking champagne from his own eyes, Granderson flashed a smile as long as Rush Street and said, laughing: “When I’m old and gray, I’ll be able to tell my grandkids that I played with Babe Ruth.”
