Bengaluru: Prime accused in spurious medicine case Prashanth was on Monday remanded to Special Investigation Team (SIT) custody by a Bengaluru Court till October 7 for further interrogation.
Earlier, Prashanth was taken into custody by SIT sleuths at Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru on his arrival from Azerbaijan.
He fled the country after spurious drugs were detected by officials at a farmhouse in Bidadi of Bengaluru South district in August.
After the detection, the Minister of Health and Family Welfare U.T. Khader constituted a SIT under Bengaluru City Additional Commissioner of Police (West) Vamshi Krishna.
Acting on a tip-off on August 18 this year, officials of Food Safety and Drugs Administration Enforcement Wing conducted an inspection on an unlicensed pharmaceutical repacking and relabelling operation at a farmhouse at number 34 of Kurubakerana Halli, Bidadi of Bengaluru South.
The raid on the farmhouse seized products estimated at Rs 4, 91, 49, 575 including injections, injection filling machinery, forged labels and stamps printing methods.
The investigation threw light on procurement of lower cost medications from other States which were then allegedly filled into new vials and relabelled to mimic expensive multinational corporation brands.
The spurious drugs were intended to cheat buyers and make profit.
The scanning codes on the spurious drugs were non-functional in the label used for this purpose.
