Well, folks, I promised a bounce back in Week 9 and boy howdy did we deliver. Best Bets went a perfect 3-0 for the first time all season, and our overall picks went 5-1 with the lone loss coming thanks to a horrific Oklahoma State defense. Best Bets now sits at 14-16 with an overall picks record of 35-25 this season. Not too shabby at all. We’re not done yet, we’re going to dive in to some picks on what might be the most replete slate of high-end games in years. Let’s get to it.

Best Bets

UCLA @ Minnesota (+5.5)

We’re back on Minnesota for the second straight week as an underdog against a top-10 ranked opponent. I don’t think the Gophers are good by any means, but they are quite adept at muddying the waters and making uninspiring Big 10 offenses even more uninspiring. UCLA has been one of the best stories of the year so far as they are undefeated in Bob Chesney’s first season. They haven’t beaten a single team with a pulse, however, since they were one of several teams to knock of a depleted Oregon team and that’s… about it. They very well might win this game, but the Gophers will keep it close and dirty.

Oklahoma @ Florida (-6.5)

Oklahoma is in the middle of panic firing season as they just canned beleaguered offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle, as if that will fix their offensive woes. To replace him, they’ve elevated tight ends coach Jason Witten (yes, that Jason Witten) to call plays. Witten has never called a play in his life, so that will certainly go smoothly. Florida has been as up and down as any team in America this year, but they get to play this one in the Swamp where they have mostly been up. This will probably be fairly low-scoring game but I still think the Gators will find enough offense to win by a touchdown.

Texas A&M @ South Carolina (-6.5)

I think it truly is a sign of the apocalypse, but I’m picking a Shane Beamer team for two weeks in a row! The Gamecocks have been the hottest team in the country since their overtime loss to Kentucky and I’m not sure the lackluster Aggies will do anything to slow them down in Columbia East this week. If South Carolina can put up 40+ points against the Oklahoma defense in Norman despite four turnovers, I think they’ll score more than enough to beat the Aggies by a touchdown at home, because lord knows Texas A&M isn’t going to score a whole lot.

Worth a look

Miami (+7.5) @ Notre Dame

I originally picked Miami in this game as one of my Best Bets prior to the announcement that Malachi Toney would be sidelined with an ankle injury for several weeks. At the time, Miami was a 5.5-point underdog and that line has understandably shifted toward Notre Dame since the new broke. The Toney loss is big for Miami, but I think they are a strong enough team to stay within a touchdown of Notre Dame, even if they don’t pull out the win. My confidence level is not quite as strong without Toney, which is why I bumped this game down into the Worth a Look section, but because the Hurricanes are getting another two points I decided to stick with my pick.

Cincinnati @ Houston (-10.5)

Cincinnati had their moment in the sun a couple weeks ago when they upset Texas Tech, but I’m fading them again for the second week in a row as they travel to Houston. The Cougars are very under the radar in the Big 12, but are very much still in the running to make the conference championship game if BYU can knock off Utah Saturday. Houston will have to win out, but they have a pretty easy closing schedule starting this week with Cincinnati. Give me the Cougs.

Georgia (-3.5) @ Ole Miss

You might see me picking the Bulldogs every week from here on out, regardless of who they play. They already had a letdown game and have rebounded amply since. This game is in Oxford, but I think Georgia will be able to do everything Texas did against Ole Miss in the first half of their game without the second-half collapse Texas strategically employed to make it close. This one will be a one-score game, but I think that score will be a touchdown and the Bulldogs will cover.
