Beverley Callard has said she had a “dreadful reaction” to new medication amid her cancer battle and is being “driven mad” as she continues to wait on results for recent tests on her stomach
Beverley Callard has said she had a “dreadful reaction” to new medication. The actress, 69, announced earlier this year that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer and has kept her fans updated ever since.
The soap icon, who is best known for having starred as Rovers landlady Liz McDonald on Coronation Street on and off for 30 years, initially underwent an operation and then completed a round of radiotherapy.
But then, medics urged her to undergo further scans on her stomach and whilst awaiting the results, she said her consultant planned to prescribe three medications to help treat the problem.
Speaking in a new video posted to Instagram on Tuesday evening, she said: “Still no results from the biopsies from gastro. So, I’m just waiting and waiting, which is driving me mad. And, then had a dreadful reaction to the medication. One medication clashed with another one that I’m already on.
“And boy, I was so ill yesterday. I’ve stopped taking the one that caused the problems, and I’ve been much better today.” Around the time she announced her diagnosis, Beverley relocated to Ireland with her husband Jon McEwan so she could take on the part of Lily Patterson in Fair City, and is due to be back on set tomorrow.
She added: “So, back at work tomorrow. I’ve had my nails done this afternoon. You know when you think, ‘cannot be bothered to do it, but I’ve done it.’ So, yeah, I’m still waiting, so that’s the news.”
But Beverley finished her update on a positive note, and told fans just how much she is enjoying have her mother-in-law around at the moment. She added: “But Crystal, Jon’s mum, is having a mega time. She’s loving it! Yesterday, Jon was looking after both of us. He’s definitely a keeper, yes, he is indeed!”
As always, Beverley received an outpouring of support from her followers, with one writing: “It is so hard waiting for results isn’t it. We have been there many times. I hope that the saying “no news is good news” is really true for you. Love to you all.”
Another said: “Beverly I’m so sorry to hear you were poorly yesterday and still waiting for the results of your biopsy please God you’ll get the results tomorrow…Sending you and John lots of love.” A third wrote: “Look after yourself, you look fab, I’m sorry you haven’t got your results back yet.”
Just before the weekend, the TV star told fans: “I went to the hospital yesterday… still not got the results of the biopsies from my stomach, but apparently there’s a lot of erosion in my stomach and chronic inflammation.
“So the consultant said I was going to be given three medications, two antibiotics and one that sort of protects the stomach.” The actress said she felt she was back in “limbo” as she waited for further information, and hoped she would find out more the following day.
Earlier this month, Beverley, who is also known for playing Flo Henshaw in the sitcom Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps, told fans that an ambulance had to be called when she lost consciousness on set at Fair City.
She said: “I recovered and felt fine again but I can’t explain what it was. I was boiling hot. I seemed to lose 10 minutes but I don’t know why. I was checked out by the ambulance men and everything and they were happy to let me come home as long as I rested.”
“But aside from that, I don’t know what’s going on . But I’m at the hospital again next week, so I’ll probably know more, and I’m awaiting the results of these other tests and the biopsies they’ve taken from my stomach.
“So, that’s it really. As I say, I feel a bit of a fraud, but the dogs know I’m poorly, they won’t leave me alone again. So, there we go. If anybody else has had this, please let me know, because I don’t know what’s going on with me at all. Lots of love.”
