Coronation Street legend Beverley Callard has spoken of her frustration after her cancer treatment was delayed yet again and claimed the treatment centre had “never heard of her”

Beverley Callard has suffered another setback amid her cancer battle. The actress, 69, announced in February that she had been diagnosed with the early stages of breast cancer and, following an initial operation that took place earlier this year and has been due to start radiotherapy for some time now.

The Coronation Street legend, who played Liz McDonald on and off for 30 years, recently relocated to Ireland with her husband Jon McEwan so she could star in the RTE soap Fair City.

There had previously been a delay in getting her radiotherapy treatment started owing to logistics surrounding getting her medical records from the UK.

Now, Beverley has issued another update after being referred to a radiotherapist but still had not had any confirmation of an appointment – but there was more made news on the cards as it emerged that the new hospital she was due to receive treatment at had “never even heard” of her.

She said: “I’m having a bit of a nightmare. I went to the hospital twice last week – they’re fantastic. I have an appointment on Tuesday with one guy and then an appointment on Thursday with the oncologist, she was amazing. They’ve now referred me to the radiotherapist and she said said the appointment would come through quickly because it’s quite urgent, it’s been such a long time since my operation. Anyway, I’d not heard anything. It was a Bank Holiday here in Ireland on Monday, so I’d not heard anything.

“On Tuesday, I tried to get in touch to find out what’s going on. Four and a half hours on the phone. The radiotherapy is at a [clinic] I’ve not been to, and I managed to get in touch with them after four-and-a-half hours on the phone and they’ve never heard of me. There’s no record of me in the system so systems…that happens with everything, everywhere.

“And so I’m going to have to go to the hospital again in the morning and see if I can see someone and say, ‘Hello, I’m here!’ I’m still in limbo and it’s driving me mad. Come on, let’s crack on now. Aside from that, I’m okay. Thank you for all your messages and telling me your radiotherapy stories as well, it helps. It’s filling in the gaps and answering lots of questions that are in my head so, thank you. Lots of love.”

She captioned the post: “Unfortunately it feels like one hurdle after the other at the moment! Trying my hardest to get appointment information and to keep moving forwards but after hours on the phone I’ve made little progress! Hopefully tomorrow will be better!”

Fans piled into the comments section, outraged that she had found herself in this situation. One raged: “You need to Email the CEO of the hospital! This is disgraceful you have been patient it’s now time to say something to those above.”

Another begged: “Beverley do not leave that hospital tomorrow without a radiology appointment. Absolutely disgraceful that you are going through this!”

“This is the 21st century, everything is sent my computer, email and is received immediately,” a follower fumed. “They’re not waiting for letters and post to arrive in a couple of weeks time! That old excuse is long gone. I wish I lived nearby, I would make sure you were not forgotten or at the back of a queue!”

Beverley’s husband Jon also spoke of his frustration in his own Instagram video, where he said: “What a crap day we’re having. Beverley won’t say any of this because she doesn’t like to offend anyone. But we go to the hospital last week and we’re almost saying ‘Well, you should be having radiotherapy now.’ So it’s all urgent but nothing Friday, obviously nothing over the weekend, nothing yesterday.

“Today, we waited until lunchtime. Nothing. So we phoned and she’s been referred to the radiotherapy centre, or so we thought. We ring them. They’ve never heard of her. That’s not good. She’s obviously pretty fed up with everything. Why can’t these people…if they say they’re going to do it, just do it!”

The I’m A Celebrity…South Africa star first revealed news of her diagnosis in February during an appearance on RTE’s Late Late Show, and explained that she received the diagnosis just minutes before she was due on set for her new soap role.

She said: “I’ve had some tests just before I left the UK, and literally, 15, 20 minutes before I was in my dressing room at Fair City, getting ready to go on, and I was quite nervous and thinking, ‘I hope everybody thinks I’m all right’, whatever. “And my consultant rang me and said, ‘you’ve got to come back to the UK’ I said, ‘Well, I can’t possibly, I’ve just taken a new job’. I said ‘I’m away for a month’, and I was diagnosed with breast cancer.

“But I’m fine, I’m absolutely fine. My head was a bit mashed for the first few days. It’s very early stages, and I’m along with thousands of other women as well.”
