BHUBANESWAR: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national president Nitin Nabin on Monday held a series of intensive interaction sessions with leaders of the Odisha unit, laying out a roadmap to consolidate the party’s gains after its historic victory in the 2024 Assembly elections that ended the 24-year rule of the Biju Janata Dal.
The day-long exercise, which included organisational meetings, strategy discussions and training programmes, was aimed at preparing the party for the crucial rural local body elections scheduled in 2027. The BJP leadership views the upcoming panchayat polls as a key test of the party’s grassroots strength after coming to power in Odisha for the first time.
Nabin began the day with a training programme in Bhubaneswar attended by a large number of party functionaries and grassroots leaders. He later travelled to Puri and offered prayers at the revered Jagannath Temple.
In the afternoon, the BJP chief held separate meetings with state office-bearers, morcha presidents, MPs, MLAs and members of the state Cabinet at the party headquarters in Bhubaneswar. Sources said the discussions largely revolved around strengthening the organisation at the booth and panchayat levels, improving coordination between the government and the party organisation, and ensuring better delivery of public services.
Senior BJP leader Basanta Panda said the party president stressed the need to strengthen the organisational structure across rural Odisha ahead of the local body elections.
State revenue minister Suresh Pujari said the deliberations focused on making governance more people-centric.
“The discussions focused on strengthening coordination between the government and the organisation, improving grassroots outreach and making governance more people-centric. The party president advised on measures required within respective departments to enhance public engagement and service delivery,” Pujari said.
Political observers believe the BJP leadership is aware that despite its emphatic Assembly victory in 2024, the party still faces the challenge of establishing durable influence in rural Odisha, traditionally considered the stronghold of the BJD.
The BJP had won 78 of the 147 Assembly seats in 2024 and formed the government on its own for the first time in Odisha. However, its performance in the 2022 panchayat elections had exposed its organisational weaknesses in rural areas. Out of 852 Zilla Parishad seats, the BJP had managed to secure only 42 seats, while the BJD had swept 766 seats. The Congress won 37 seats and Independents bagged seven.
Political analyst Srirama Dash said the panchayat elections would serve as a litmus test for the BJP government’s popularity.
“Panchayat elections are widely regarded as a barometer of a political party’s grassroots strength. The BJP understands that while it benefited from anti-incumbency sentiment against the Naveen Patnaik-led BJD government in 2024, it now has to independently prove its governance credentials and organisational depth in rural Odisha,” Dash said.
He added that a strong performance in the rural polls would be crucial for the BJP if it intends to retain power in the state in the 2029 Assembly elections.
