Bengaluru: BJP Karnataka president B Y Vijayendra on Tuesday apologised for his remarks against Congress functionaries in Karnataka, saying he had used certain words in a fit of anger and had no intention of hurting anyone, following a poster campaign targeting him at the residence of his father and former Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa in Bengaluru.

A poster criticising Vijayendra was pasted on the compound wall of Yediyurappa’s residence in Dollars Colony, apparently in retaliation for his recent remarks against Congress leaders. The poster was subsequently removed by the staff.

“I admit that I used certain words in Davanagere, but I did not use them deliberately. If the Congress leaders have been hurt by my choice of words, I apologise,” Vijayendra told reporters in Kolar while responding to the controversy.

Explaining the circumstances that led to his remarks, he said unemployment among youths and the Congress government’s handling of the reservation issue had angered him.

“Generally, I do not use such language, either on public platforms or under any circumstances. The reason I became angry was that unemployed youths across the state are today taking to the streets to protest against the Congress government,” he said.

Referring to the alleged irregularities in the Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC) and the reservation issue, Vijayendra accused the Congress government of failing to initiate reforms and properly defend the reservation matter before the Karnataka High Court.

“Similarly, when the government failed to properly argue the reservation issue before the Karnataka High Court, I naturally became agitated and used certain words,” he said.

“If my choice of words has hurt anyone, I certainly apologise. I did not use those words deliberately. I have already clarified that I do not speak that way and never do so,” he added.

Vijayendra had made the controversial remarks at a press conference in Davanagere, questioning the Congress government’s handling of the reservation issue and accusing it of doing injustice to oppressed and marginalised communities.

“If these Congress people had any sense of honour or self-respect, they should have properly argued the case concerning reservation before the Karnataka High Court. Instead, the Congress government has indulged in mere drama and deceit, and without presenting its case properly before the court, has now done injustice to those oppressed and marginalised communities,” he had said.
