: The Tragedy
Kerrie Porter, a legally blind U.S. Army veteran who also suffers from PTSD, experienced a devastating loss in March when her service dog, Bruno, was killed by a car near a Georgia interstate. Bruno had been paired with Porter for only two weeks before the tragedy occurred. According to the nonprofit Top Dogg K9, Bruno was startled by a group of dogs during a walk at night, bolted, and was later found deceased along Interstate 285, about three miles from Porter’s home.
Bruno’s short time with Porter was impactful-his specialized training helped her manage her disabilities, including waking her when her blood pressure spiked. The loss was deeply felt by Porter, who described Bruno as a sweet and supportive companion1.
: Hayden Arrives
About a month after Bruno’s death, Porter received an unexpected and heartwarming surprise: a new service dog named Hayden, who is Bruno’s brother. The Top Dogg K9 Foundation, with the support of Montlick Injury Attorneys (who donated $15,000 to cover Hayden’s training and placement), orchestrated the surprise. Porter was deeply moved by the gesture and the outpouring of community support.
Hayden, a standard poodle like Bruno, had received basic training as a puppy in an Alabama prison before returning to Top Dogg for specialized service dog training. Porter expressed her gratitude, emphasizing the importance of having a service dog accompany her everywhere, especially given the challenges of navigating VA facilities as a blind veteran.
The community’s response to Porter’s loss and recovery has been overwhelmingly positive. In addition to her new service dog, Porter shared the joyful news that she is expecting a baby girl later this year. Hayden will join her at home once a new backyard fence is installed to ensure his safety.
Blake Rashad, co-founder of Top Dogg, highlighted the vital role service dogs play in helping veterans regain independence and cope with the long-term effects of their service. Montlick Injury Attorneys have also pledged to support the training of more service dogs for deserving veterans in the future.
“It’s overwhelming to realize how many people care about my progress and my ability to function,” Porter said, reflecting on the support she received from both organizations and the wider community24.
