Bonnie Tyler Fans Gather In Swansea To Pay Final Respects

Tyler, whose real name was Gaynor Sullivan, died unexpectedly in Portugal on July 8 at the age of 75. Her coffin, draped in the Welsh flag and accompanied by a framed photograph, was transported along Newton Road to her former home in Llwynderw.

Fans lined the streets, placed flowers on the hearse and applauded as the procession passed. The crowd also sang Tyler’s signature hit “Total Eclipse of the Heart”, creating an emotional tribute to the singer.

Tyler divided her time between Portugal’s Algarve region and her Victorian home near Mumbles, overlooking Swansea Bay. She rose to international fame with songs including “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” “I Need a Hero,” “It’s a Heartache” and “If You Were a Woman (And I Was a Man).”

Among those gathered was 18-year-old Carys Edwards, who described Tyler as “an inspiration to everybody” and said the singer’s music had touched generations of people in Wales.

Fans travelled from across Britain and abroad to witness the procession. Michael Bone, 58, and his partner Alan Hawkins, 54, travelled from Derby to pay their respects, while others reportedly came from as far as Austria.

Tyler represented the UK at the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö, Sweden, with “Believe in Me,” finishing 19th.

A celebration of her life will be held at Swansea Minster on Monday. The invitation-only service will be broadcast on a large screen at nearby St David’s Square, allowing members of the public to pay their respects.

After the service, Tyler’s coffin will travel through her home village of Skewen before a private gathering for family and friends.

Tyler grew up in Skewen and remained proud of her Welsh roots throughout her career. Her death drew tributes from figures including then-prime minister Keir Starmer, who called her an “iconic figure” and one of Britain’s greatest recording artists.
