Adilabad: A new book titled Kummarikuntoni Kathalu by writer Dr Cheman Singh, chronicling rural life in northern Telangana during the 1970s and 1980s, was recently released in Hyderabad and has drawn appreciation for its content and narrative style.
The book is a compilation of the author’s childhood and teenage experiences in Kummarikunta village in Julapalli mandal of Peddapalli district. Structured across 42 chapters, it reads as a reflective monologue on village life, friendships and social relations of the time.
The narrative brings out lesser-known expressions, interpersonal bonds and everyday realities of rural society, evoking a sense of nostalgia. It also acknowledges that rural life in that period differed across caste and class backgrounds, set against the presence of feudal structures and the spread of the Naxalite movement.
Dr Cheman Singh, a medical practitioner, has previously published two Telugu poetry anthologies, Edari Swapnam Madhya and Avishkarinchani Drushyam. One of his works has also been translated into English as Amid Dream of Desert.
The book is accompanied by digital illustrations created by his son Suraj. The author’s wife, Kavitha, supported his literary work.
Writers Allam Rajaiah and Nandini Sidda Reddy commended the effort to document personal and social histories of rural life, noting its relevance at a time of rapid technological and social change in villages.
