The Brampton Triveni Mandir and Community Centre in Canada has cancelled an upcoming Indian consular event scheduled for November 17 due to serious concerns over potential violent protests. The decision follows intelligence from Peel Regional Police indicating an “extremely high and imminent threat level” of violence, prompting the temple administration to prioritize the safety of attendees.
The event was intended to assist Indian-origin Hindus and Sikhs in renewing life certificates, essential documents for various official purposes. In a statement, the temple expressed regret over the cancellation, stating, “We apologize to all community members who were depending on the event. We are deeply saddened that Canadians now feel unsafe coming to Hindu temples in Canada.”
This cancellation comes on the heels of a violent disruption at another Indian consular camp held at the Hindu Sabha Temple in Brampton on November 3, which involved clashes between demonstrators and attendees. The incident has raised significant concerns within the community, leading to calls for increased security measures from local authorities.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the violence against Hindu temples in Canada, labeling it a “deliberate attack” and urging Canadian authorities to ensure justice and uphold the rule of law. The ongoing tensions reflect broader diplomatic strains between India and Canada, particularly following allegations regarding Indian involvement in the assassination of a pro-Khalistan activist on Canadian soil.
