The Brandon Aiyuk saga has taken a turn. Nearly a year after Aiyuk stopped reporting to the San Francisco 49ers for rehab following a major knee injury, Aiyuk is back in the facility, with his team hoping to facilitate an exit.

Coach Kyle Shanahan seems insistent about Aiyuk not being an option for the 49ers, despite their various wide receiver injuries, because of Aiyuk’s off-field behavior. San Francisco is hoping to trade Aiyuk, though it seems a release is the likelier route.

The snag in all this is the $13 million bonus the 49ers wan’t back from Aiyuk. Once the 28-year-old pays that back, his return will likely come soon after.

So, where will Aiyuk go? Here are four landing spots for the embattled receiver.

New England Patriots

The A.J. Brown trade and Romeo Doubs signings haven’t worked out, primarily due to health, leaving Drake Maye without ample weaponry. Aiyuk’s explosiveness could give the Patriots offense an added vertical dimension alongside an emerging Pop Douglas.

Washington Commanders

Aiyuk has longed for a trade to the Commanders to reunite with his former college quarterback, Jayden Daniels, and the need is certainly there with Terry McLaurin out for the season. However, at 2-4-1, Washington may not be inclined to make any win-now moves.

Kansas City Chiefs

The Chiefs have needed a receiver with Aiyuk’s ability ever since Tyreek Hill walked out the door, particularly after Tyquan Thornton went down after a promising start this season. Defenses are beginning to contain Kenneth Walker III with the Kansas City passing offense not exactly keeping them honest, so Aiyuk could remedy that issue.

Davante Adams is out several weeks with a hamstring injury, leaving the Rams thin behind Puka Nacua at receiver. Aiyuk would be a much-needed addition, and if anyone can return him to his dominant form, it’s Sean McVay.
